5 Amazing Stop Motion Game Animations

Posted by Nate Eckerson on

Get inspired by amazing stop motion recreations of popular games! These are recreations of games you may have played yourself. Sometimes the creators make a video screen-capture of a gaming session, with a program like FRAPS, and base their animated action off this reference. Some are made with no reference, but as with any complicated project a good deal of planning ahead makes the animation go smoothly.

Bricks of War - LEGO

Gears of War redone in LEGO. An insanely huge LEGO collection allows Alex Kobbs, the creator of this film, to build an insanely huge (and realistic!) set. You can watch the making-of here, which showcases some DSLR stop motion technique.

Starcraft: Brick Rush - LEGO

This is another film by Alex Kobbs. It's a good example of animation with micro-scale LEGO models, and cotton-wool explosion effects. ;-)

Mario - Post-Its

There are several animated Super Mario recreations on YouTube, but none are quite so creative as this version, made with Post-It notes. 7000 of them, in fact. Come to think of it, there's a lot of stuff in my room Mario could be jumping over...

Audience Tetris - People

Imagine how many times the audience had to get up and sit down to make this film! The GAME OVER Project made several games, including Pac-Man and Space Invaders in this format.

Game Over - Everything

PES recreates several classic games, using many familiar objects. The Pac-Man animation is making me hungry!
